Description
Marcel Gresse is a fretwork craftsman based in Bourg d'Oisans who creates unique items cut and sculpted from solid wood. He uses an ancestral method called "intarsia", the art of which is to give life to a subject.
Passionate about all forms of art since my early childhood, I have found in the "Antarsia" method a concentrate of approaches where I can invent myself and give free rein to my imagination and creativity. Each artist has his or her own technique and approach to art, with different styles. The technique is just a starting point for letting your artistic creativity roam.
What is the "Antarsia" method?
It's a wood art technique meaning "marquetry" or called "wood mosaic". Each sculpture is made up of several pieces of wood of various colors, cut and assembled in the manner of a "puzzle". It's also a derivation of the puzzle principle.
After shaping a project on paper, we cut out the relevant elements, prepare them, assemble them and then glue them together. If you cut out the various elements on the same board, you're talking about "segmentation".
"Antarsia" is the mosaic composed of different types of wood, which acts as a tint (as in marquetry). I use artificial colors (lasures, inks, watercolors) to highlight the subject and the woods of our regions (lime, poplar, plane, stone pine, walnut, ash, larch and fruit trees).
Unlike marquetry, the "Antarsia" method emphasizes relief to give a three-dimensional effect to each piece of wood, which is cut, sanded, assembled and then painted.
This art form is fascinating because it can be used to create a wide range of objects on a variety of themes (animals, flowers, characters...). Compared with cabinetmaking, this art requires very few tools and little space. It's an easy and inexpensive way to get started.
